Lay Article Discussion: This week you get to work on something a little different. We will explore how accurate lay journals (example: Prevention, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, etc.) and newspapers are in reporting research. Find a lay (non-medical journal) article describing a research study that was done. I want you post a response to the article as you would discuss it with a friend or colleague. It doesn’t have to be a long article (i.e., it may only be a paragraph in Women’s Day or Reader’s Digest, or a non-scientific internet article, etc.) Please choose an article that says something about statistics. Remember to keep things polite. 🙂 Also, you can start with the abstract from a recent popular publications and check out the original source.
Of course it would be ideal to find a study that shows correlations, although any type of reference to statistical findings of a research study will work this week. I always enjoy seeing what you all find.
Here is a good article referring to what we often will see regarding correlation and causation in lay articles:
Fletcher, J. (2014, May 26). Spurious correlations: Margarine linked to divorce? BBC.
https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-27537142Links to an external site.
If you can attach your article, that would be great; then others can give more feedback.
NO WORD LIMIT AS LONG AS YOU CAN ANSWER THE QUESTIONS AFTER FINDING ONE ARTICLE. ALSO PLEASE SEND ME THE ARTICLE 🙂
1. Discuss the statistics you found in your lay article.
2. Was the description detailed enough to tell you what statistics were used?
3. Did they follow the assumptions they should for this type of data? How did they gather the data? Would you consider this a scientific study? Note whether you would recommend parametric or nonparametric tests for this data? If there are correlations, should they use Pearson or Spearman correlational analyses, and why?
4. I would also like your thoughts on the BBC article I have linked above. (You don’t have to go into great detail – just something important you may have learned about reporting correlations or statistics in general from the BBC article).
