The film “And the Band Played On” portrays the early years of the AIDS epidemic in the United States. In spite of opposition from politicians and medical professionals, Dr. Don Francis advocates for the discovery of AIDS in the movie (Andrylbitencourt, 2014). In an effort to understand more about the illness and look into the spread, he joins the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where he eventually receives an AIDS diagnosis. The social stigma attached to AIDS is one of the main issues that has impeded the fight against the illness. Stigma has a negative effect on health outcomes, including worse quality of life overall, missed visits, poor medication adherence, and greater melancholy. Back then, people’s views on homosexuality were more conservative than they are today. Whenever AIDS has won, stigma, shame, skepticism, discrimination, and apathy have all been on its side. Each time AIDS has been defeated, it has been because of people’s willingness to trust one another, communicate openly, support from families and communities, human solidarity, and a never-ending search for solutions.
I do not believe the AIDS epidemic could have been prevented. AIDS could have been averted, but it was difficult to stop due to a lack of resources and information about the virus and its spread. The lack of information, particularly in regard to available resources like condoms for protection while having sexual intercourse and the need to test for AIDS and take necessary management interventions in case one tests positive is among the reasons AIDS has prevailed. Unlike in the past, HIV/AIDS is now a preventable disease that can be prevented with good education and the use of a number of services. More healthcare providers are aware of the diseases than ever before, and drugs for HIV/AIDS treatment are being investigated and developed. HIV-positive individuals should also use ARVS in order to prevent adverse health impacts and live for longer (Straubinger et.al, 2020).
