Morpheus: What is real? How do you define real? If you’re talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.
In this scene, Morpheus seems to promote a philosophical position known as “reductive materialism.” In brief, materialists think that the world and everything in it (including the mind) is composed entirely of physical matter. A competing philosophical position is known as “dualism.” Dualists think that there is (or are) some “immaterial” component(s) in the world, though they disagree among themselves about what components those are or what it means to be immaterial. What position more closely aligns with your own? Construct an argument supporting your position. For evidence, draw from the film, the readings from Unit 1, and “common sense” experience.
I attached below of the introduction I wrote and some ideas i had. I am arguing for dualism but struggling to find any good points, i want to mention a paper discussed in class which talked about it from an islamic model. also make sure to use examples from the movie the matrix which argues for reductive materialism.
