Before IDEA 2004, the most common practice for identifying children with learning disabilities was determining if a discrepancy exists between their ability and achievement. The discrepancy criterion is usually determined by comparing the student’s I Q score to an achievement test score. There are many problems with this system of identification. Today, the R T I model is a key component to the identification of students with learning disabilities. Write a two page position paper explaining some of the problems with the discrepancy criterion and supporting response to intervention as a better method of identifying children with learning disabilities.
