AirToxScreen Mapping Tool | US EPA
32835 seneca trail Slatyfork, WV 26291 “A local community center is educating citizens about their risk from hazards present in the air around them. The community wants to learn about this by using data about recent ambient air quality from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). As an environmental scientist, you have volunteered to create a video presentation to share at the community center about the air quality in the community and potential risks. Updated instructions:
There appears to have been some confusion in the instructions (the main block disappeared)
so the site might be having some updates, but it is working this morning-

Click on the map image on the right.
Then follow the directions I posted in the previous announcement (I’ll repeat them here)
You’re going for about a 8-15 minute talk.
>>
1) Basically, just navigate to your house like you would using Google or Apple maps.
2) Click your house
2a) The tract is then selected and a popup window appears with tons and tons of the data that the instruction sheet is asking you to find.
<< So what are you look at? A bunch of graphs with data. That's great. What do you do with this? From the census block data (that part that pops up when you click on your house) Tell the community (remember this is to your neighbors) 1) What's your EPA census block region? 1a) what the total risk in the area? 2) What's your population? 2a) What's the risk by air toxic and what's the risk by source type (these are two different slides, copy over the graphs, explain them in detail to your community (what are nonpoint and secondary cancers/ they sound scary, tell me what they are) 3) What's the pollution risk (top 3 chems) in the area? 3a) investigate what these chemicals are (this is one of your citations) Next click the facilities tab make sure you are in your region, otherwise follow the directions up top again 1)Click facilities emissions tab at the bottom, you might notice that it is defaulting to California, that's OK. 2) Next Click facilities search (#2 in the pic below), enter in your info and click apply, the facilities will appear at the bottom. Click on the ones that are near you. 1) I want you to pick out the top 3 sources. Name names to your community your neighbors need to know which companies are causing them health problems 1a) note the small horizontal slider at the bottom, make sure you slide right and slowly there are tens of chemicals.. not all populated, that each facility may or may not be emitting. 2) tell us what the emissions are from the facilities. 2a) investigate the chemicals, what are the health problems? Don't forget a summary slide close out your talk to your neighbors (remember you're not talking to me, the faculty dude, I'm just a neighbor who runs a cafe and am concerned about air pollution. I don't know anything about this so you have to teach me. You're going for about a 8-15 minute talk. Pictures and graphs are important pictures of the facilities are easy to get from google street view Don't forget your citations page.
